Overturning the Tables of Economic Injustice
A Holy Week Action on Payday Lending
with the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Richard Cordray
Monday, March 21
Open House at 5:00 pm; Action at 6:00 pm
Shiloh Temple, 1201 W Broadway, Minneapolis;
Join us to push forward regulation of payday lending at the federal and state level. We will be joined by Richard Cordray of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), as well as other state and national policymakers to understand how we can stop the debt trap and lift people out of poverty.
The average Payday borrower in Minnesota is charged nearly 300% interest and is stuck in a trap of over ten loans. Payday lending is extracting nearly $150 million from our communities. Payday lending sits on the corner of two urgent crises – the worst racial disparities in the country and a growing divide between the rich and the poor. We need an economy that works for everyone and does not take advantage of those in need.
The CFPB was created by President Obama to protect everyday consumers and make sure people are not being taking advantage of. Now, the CFPB is going to try and regulate payday lending across the country.
Sponsored by Shiloh Temple, MN State Baptist Convention, and St. Peter AME in partnership with ISAIAH.
