ISAIAH’s Prophetic Resistance: September 23, 2017

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.”

Matthew 24:6-8

Our hope is in the Lord. This year has been a whirlwind. Moral decay, families forcibly separated, the health of our neighbors and loved ones ignored, hurricanes, hate, fear, and violence infused words and acts, floods, the responsibility to care for one another has been abandoned, wildfires and its ash falling from the sky, false lines of division drawn, earthquakes, clean water denied… the list of things worth being alarmed about grows longer daily. Yet, sacred text reminds us to, “see to it that you are not alarmed… All these are the beginning of birth pains.”

Our hope is in the Lord, and what a dynamic place for it to be! As we fight the battles of today and prepare for the ones of tomorrow, we carry the banner of love, justice, faith and hope. We collectively have important roles to play. This birthing process is messy, painful and hard, but what beauty awaits when we stay the course!

Our hope is in the Lord. And as we lean in to what’s to come, press in to the Lord, and lean on each other, we will see that we are stronger, better and ready to the claim the victory before us. Together, with the help of God and each other, we will win.

Senate Once Again Trying to Kill Affordable Care Act: May Cause Death and Financial Devastation to Many

Trumpcare is attempting to rise again but this time under the name “Graham-Cassidy.” Do not be deceived. This bill is as big and bad (if not more so) than previous repeal plans for the Affordable Care Act.

Graham-Cassidy has not received a CBO score, but reliable estimates show that it will:

  • Steal healthcare from 32 million people by 2026.
  • End Medicaid as we know it.
  • Dramatically increase premiums for those with pre-existing conditions.
  • Punish states that have expanded Medicaid and (temporarily) reward those who didn’t.
  • The Republican authors claim Graham-Cassidy will allow for more state innovation. But just yesterday, it became clear that the Trump administration won’t grant Minnesota a reinsurance waiver unless we cut MinnesotaCare. (See Star Tribune, “Feds Torpedo MinnesotaCare” for more details.)

Action needed!  With your help, we can STOP this horrible and harmful proposal!

1.  Call your Member of Congress and tell them to oppose the Graham-Cassidy proposal if it should make it to the House of Representatives. This bill will steal healthcare from millions of Americans, end Medicaid as we know it, and cause great harm to our healthcare system.

Betty McCollum  651-224-9191
Rick Nolan  218-464-5095
Tim Walz  507-388-2149

Jason Lewis  888-216-4934
Keith Ellison  612-522-1212
Erik Paulson  952-405-8510

2.  Sign up for a Phone Bank shift:  Come phone bank with us and the This is Medicaid coalition and STOP Graham-Cassidy in the Senate! We will be calling voters in other states to generate calls to their Senators since both Minnesota’s Senators Franken and Klobuchar oppose this bill. Phone Bank Details:  Monday 9/25, from 5-8pm. (Additional shifts may be added, check the sign up link below.)  Where: SEIU State Council, 2233 University Avenue West, #422, St. Paul.  Sign-Up:

3.  Call your Senators. Thank them for voting against Graham-Cassidy.

Join us at Rep. Betty McCullum’s office to support Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA):  Thursday, Sept 28 at Noon

Clergy, faith leaders, and DACA participants will share why McCullum should unequivocally support a clean DREAM Act by describing how DACA positively impacted them and what it could mean for them to lose it. They will also push for more comprehensive reform that doesn’t vilify their parents and grandparents, who fought hard to give their children better futures. We will lift up the voices of our community members who have benefited from DACA, and honor their commitment to bettering our community.

President Donald Trump’s decision to rescind DACA has been a clear indication of cruelty and moral decay to the families and communities that have benefited from this policy. Trump has given Congress six months to solidify a satisfactory replacement. Rep. McCullum has shown strong support for immigrant rights in the past. She is being held accountable to that support in this moment. There are many concerned constituents affected by DACA in her district. and will negatively impact the economy and quality of life for all Minnesotans.

Northfield Neighbors United Continues Push for Municipal ID

ISAIAH has been supporting Northfield Neighbors United to propose a municipal identification program for all Northfield residents. The Neighbors United group was formed last winter for immigrants and allies to address concerns following the election.

After several meetings and “know your rights” trainings, members decided to focus on policy options that would demonstrate love and support for immigrant community members.

The municipal ID program would establish an ID card accessible to all Northfield residents, which would have practical benefits to all residents who do not have access to a state ID or driver’s license, and could also be tied to other community-wide perks, such as events, transportation, discounts to local businesses, and more.

On Tuesday, September 12, the Human Rights Commission presented to the City Council and officially recommended the establishment of the municipal ID program. The Council chambers were overflowing with over 70 community members in attendance, including many ISAIAH members.

The City’s next steps are to do further research, and potentially vote on an ordinance in the next couple of months. While there are many other cities around the country that have municipal IDs, Northfield would be the first in Minnesota, and it could set an example for other Minnesota communities.

National Voter Registration Day: Tuesday, September 26

As people of faith and members of this democracy, we have a duty to make informed and powerful decisions in the proverbial voting booth and then hold our officials accountable to us as we co-govern. The first step to this process is making sure you’re registered. Do you need to register to vote or know someone who needs to register?  In Minnesota, check ou the Secretary of State’s website to register online or answer your voter registration questions.

A Sanctuary at Shir Tikvah

Shir Tikvah Congregation in the Twin Cities was featured in American Jewish World News for the incredible work and preparation they’ve been doing as a Sanctuary congregation. Blessings to Shir Tikvah and Rabbi Michael Adam Latz as they continue to take this path of prophetic resistance with us.

We have been called for such a time as this!
