ISAIAH’s Prophetic Resistance Campaign
News and Actions for the Week of May 5

At our Prophetic Resistance gathering in January, over 2,000 people of faith committed to counter the hate and tyranny being unleashed in the nation by participating in 100 Days of Prophetic Action — making a daily commitment to fight for moral issues like affordable healthcare or education equity and against immoral agendas like predatory lending or the for-profit prison industrial complex.

Budget as a Moral Document

The Minnesota legislature wants to cut $500m from Health & Human Services, mostly taking it out of the hides of low income families with children. They also shortchange education and transit funding, with a 10% cut in bus service and hikes in fares. Yet they want to provide major tax cuts to businesses, big tobacco and wealthy families. The estate tax is the second largest tax cut, costing $162m over the next two years to help the wealthiest families create financial dynasties for their families.

Read on and find ideas on prophetic actions you can take this week.

ISAIAH Clergy, Faith Leaders Held ‘Church’ at the Capitol

ISAIAH clergy and faith leaders held a ‘Triune Prophetic Worship for Justice’ at the Capitol this week. They conducted three worship services of prayer, singing, scriptural reading and sermons – at the House Chambers, the Senate Chambers and the Governor’s office. The crowd had signs declaring “Thou Shalt Not Steal” – scribing several public policy issues important to the faith community and the people of Minnesota. Read more here. MPR News reported that our voices were heard by the Governor.

ISAIAH Statement on Trumpcare House Vote

This is a time for public lament. Today the U.S. House of Representatives voted 217-213 for the so-called “American Health Care Act.” This inhumane bill destroys the healthcare of 24 million people, steals $880 billion from Medicaid, threatening the health and even the very lives of many in our nation. Read the full statement here.

Stealing Paid Sick Time through Preemption

The legislature has passed pre-emption, a corporate power grab that steals paid sick days from 150,000 workers. This would be a structural shift of power, prohibiting local cities from passing anything more progressive than what exists at the state level. The Governor has refused to commit to vetoing this harmful bill.

Call to Action:  Call Governor Dayton 651-201-3400 and tell him to VETO preemption and not use it in any trade. This legislation hurts families and it’s bad for Minnesota.

REAL ID

REAL ID has been stuck in conference committee and has no meetings posted. Speaker Daudt is saying he will insist on the requirement for proof of lawful status. This unnecessary and harmful position slams the door on immigrant hopes to restore access to driver’s licenses through administrative action which is how driver’s licenses were taken away by Governor Pawlenty.

Call to Action:

  • Call the Governor 651-201-3400 and urge him to veto REAL ID if it restricts the administration’s ability to restore access to driver’s license for undocumented immigrants.
  • Call Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka 651-296-4875 and urge him to stand firm on the Senate position on REAL ID.
  • Call House Speaker Kurt Daudt 651-296-5364 and tell him to drop the unnecessary anti-immigrant language in the REAL ID bill.

Health & Human Services Omnibus Bill – Troubling in three big ways:

  1. Pushes families and children off Medicaid:  Increased audits would push many families off Medicaid whose incomes go up and down and hover right around the income eligibility cutoff line.
  2. 100,000 Minnesotans lose affordable high quality health insurance: It closes down MNSure, Minnesota’s health exchange, and moves our exchange to the federal exchange. This will effectively eliminate MinnesotaCare, a successful 25-year old program to provide high quality healthcare insurance to 100,000 vulnerable Minnesotans. Eligibility for MNCare is built into the MNSure exchange, but not the federal exchange.
  3. It allows the stealing of $7 billion of public assets by for-profit health insurance corporations:  Earlier this year, the Governor signed legislation allowing non-profit HMO’s to become for-profit corporations. Language that would protect the $7 BILLION in public assets held by non-profit HMO’s disappeared in closed door negotiations. Those non-profit insurance companies could convert to for-profit corporations and take the money with them to line CEO and shareholder pockets with public funds.

Call to Action: Call the conferees and ask them to protect vulnerable children and families in their budget by restoring funding, preserving MinnesotaCare, and preventing the HMO conversion of public assets into private profit.

House Conferees
Matt Dean, 651-296-3018; Joe Schomacker, 651-296-5505; Jennifer Schultz, 651-296-2228; Debra Kiel, 651-296-5091; Tony Albright, 651-296-5185

Senate Conferees
Michelle R. Benson, 651-296-3219; Jim Abeler, 651-296-3733; Karin Housley, 651-296-4351

ISAIAH at May Day March

ISAIAH joined hundreds of people and organizations for the May Day (May 1st) March in Minneapolis. The march’s message was focused on solidarity for the migrant and immigrant community as well as worker justice for the state of Minnesota.
