News and Actions for the Week of April 7

The House and Senate are on their Easter/Passover break until Tuesday, April 18, so we will not be publishing a newsletter next week.

Minnesota State Budget

This week ISAIAH clergy organized a press conference at the Capitol to remind the legislature that the budget is a moral document. They expressed their outrage at the House’s proposed enormous cuts to life giving services in the Health and Human Services Omnibus bill; even while Minnesota enjoys a large $1.65 billion budget surplus. If the bill passes, there will be a huge reduction of services that low income and those living in poverty depend on to survive and threatens the care received by over a million Minnesotans on Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare. Read our press release here or view the entire press conference here:

At the same press conference, the clergy spoke about preemption legislation. “If this preemption bill passes, 150,000 of our neighbors who are about to start earning paid sick days off will have that taken away,” said Pastor Mark Vinge of House of Hope Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. “That is straight out stealing. It is theft, it is morally bankrupt. We call on the Governor to veto any preemption bill that comes to his desk.”

Call to Action: We have the possibility of defeating Preemption – but we need you to help us keep the drum beat going!  Continue to call your legislators (or you may run into them while they are home on recess) and let them know you are opposed to preemption which would take away local control and result in thousands of Minnesotans losing sick leave.

Health Reinsurance

We are very disappointed in the Governor’s failure to veto the health reinsurance bill – a $542 million giveaway to health insurance companies – and the legislature for pushing it through. You can read our statement here

Real ID

Real ID legislation has been sent to conference committee. The House narrowly passed a bill which includes language that would prevent undocumented immigrants from ever being able to obtain a driver’s license. The Senate passed a bill without the anti-immigrant language by a huge margin.

Call to Action:  Call the Conferees and tell them to support the language in the Senate bill.  Senate conferees are:  Eric Pratt (651-296-4123), Scott Newman (651-296-4131) and Ann Rest (651-296-2889). House conferees are: Dennis Smith (651-296-5502), Paul Torkelson (651-296-9303) and Gene Pelowski (651-296-8637).
